Lost or stolen Mobile devices can expose confidential university data – such as student grades and patient information. This can lead to significant expense for the university, as well as personal liability for an employee if they leave the university data vulnerable. There is a university policy requiring Mobile devices have encryption and passwords:

All Mobile computing and storage devices, regardless of ownership, must have all storage encrypted. This includes laptops computers, smartphones, tablets, and USB thumb drives. Essentially, any computing device that is capable of persistent storage of user data, and is intended to be portable is covered under the Mobile Computing and Storage Devices policy. Devices also need strong passwords or passcodes to prevent unauthorized people from using or accessing them. There are some very limited and specific exceptions to these requirements. Contact your college or business unit IT department for more information. Your IT staff can help you better understand the policy and how it may affect your work or personal computing and storage devices.
